Brushing Up With Dr. Butensky
It's a new season and time for a new wardrobe. But why do we sometimes forget to update the most visible part of our look? The smile. It's the first thing someone sees on your face and sometimes the last thing on out to do lists.
We sat down with New York dentist and smile makeover guru,
Dr. Steven Butensky, for a little advice on spring smile makeovers.
Q: Is teeth bleaching painful?
A: Teeth bleaching is a simple procedure done in the office. It takes about an hour for a licensed professional using a 25% to 35% hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel. The bleaching solution can be irritating, but if done correctly, pain is not an issue.
Q: What do you think about over-the-counter whiteners?
A: Over-the-counter whiteners can take two to three weeks to get the same results as one in-office bleaching procedure. If patients have tooth decay or exposed roots, the bleach can enter these areas and cause pain.
Q: How long should you wait in between bleachings?
A: I think it should be done once every two years.
Q: Some celebs show off smile makeovers like a new car. Why can they be so noticeable?
A: I think obvious smile makeovers are ugly. Smile makeovers should appear clean, pleasing to the eye, and blend in with the face. Many celebrities have partial smile makeovers, neglecting to veneer their ugly, natural teeth. For example, six white front teeth by themselves won’t work if the rest of the mouth has a different shade and shape. It’s not an attractive presentation. It’s like buying a silver set minus a few pieces.
Q: Who is a candidate for veneers?
A: Individuals with slightly malpositioned teeth, worn or cracked teeth, or discolored teeth. An area that is often overlooked is the person who has bite problems due to excessive grinding. Short front teeth allow the back teeth to touch during grinding and activates the strong muscle groups in the face.
Q: How long does a smile makeover take, from consultation to completion?
A: During the initial consultation your smile and bite is evaluated. In the second visit, a thin layer of enamel is removed and temporary veneers are placed on the teeth. Photos and models of the temporary veneers re made and used as a template for the permanent set. The final appointment occurs two to three weeks later where I insert the porcelain laminate veneers.
